Websites for photographers: portfolio, booking enquiries and image rights

Photographers sell with images, but they get booked only when prospects know the price, the process and whether the date is free. Many photographer websites are beautiful galleries that don't answer these questions. This article shows how to turn a portfolio into a website that brings jobs, with German image rights as the example.

Portfolio by job type, not by favourite shots

Organise the portfolio by what clients book: weddings, business portraits, product shots, real estate, events. Each category gets its own page with examples, process, packages and testimonials. That way searchers find exactly what they looked for, such as "business photographer" plus town.

Prices and process

Show packages or at least starting prices with scope: duration, number of edited images, delivery time, usage rights. Business clients almost always ask about usage rights for website, advertising and social media; explain what's included and what is licensed separately.

An enquiry form with occasion, date, location, duration and budget allows a fast quote. For weddings, a date availability check often already sells the first contact.

Image rights and consent

In Germany, photographing people and publishing them in a portfolio generally requires their consent under Section 22 of the Art Copyright Act (KUG); the exceptions in Section 23, such as people as incidental detail or at gatherings, rarely help with portfolios. Get written consent for use on website and social media, ideally in the contract.

On your own website, clearly marked image rights and a note on licensing enquiries help protect against unauthorised use by others.

Fast despite large images

Large images are the most common reason for slow photographer websites, and slow pages lose visitors and rankings. Modern image formats, sizes per device and lazy loading keep quality without ruining load time. A photographer website with portfolio categories, packages and enquiry form starts at €1,800 with us; a single landing page for one offer from €600.

Frequently asked questions

Is Instagram enough as a portfolio?
Instagram shows your work well, but prices, process and enquiries work poorly there and you hardly appear in Google search. The website is the destination Instagram points to.
Can I deliver client galleries through the website?
Yes, with password-protected galleries. Make sure the provider offers a data processing agreement and stores images in the EU.
How many images belong in the portfolio?
Fewer than you think: ten to twenty strong images per category work better than a hundred similar ones.
