Websites for veterinary practices: appointments, emergencies and fees

Pet owners look for a vet in two situations: the animal is ill and it has to be quick, or they've moved and need a practice for vaccinations and check-ups. In both cases the website must instantly show when the practice can be reached, which animals it treats and how to get an appointment. Examples use German rules.

What pet owners want to see at once

Organise the website around pet owners' questions:

  • Opening hours, appointments or walk-in, and how to book.
  • Emergency service: your own or the regional service, with a clearly visible phone number.
  • Which animals are treated: dogs and cats, small animals, exotics, horses, livestock.
  • Specialisms such as dentistry, surgery, physiotherapy, each with its own page.
  • Directions, parking and what to bring to the first visit.

Explain costs honestly

In Germany veterinary services are billed under the vet fee schedule (GOT). The rates in its fee list are the single rate; lower fees may only be agreed in the exceptions it defines. Advertising discounts on treatments is therefore a bad idea.

What still helps owners: an explanation of how a bill is made up, why emergency service costs more and whether the practice bills pet insurers directly.

Relieve appointments and phone

Online appointments for vaccinations, check-ups and follow-ups save phone time; urgent cases stay on the phone. A form for repeat prescriptions and a callback request relieve the team further. Ask for species, the animal's name and the reason; information about the animal isn't health data under the GDPR, but the owner's details are personal data.

Legal notice and cost

As a regulated profession, the legal notice must include the title "Tierarzt" with the country where it was granted, the competent veterinary chamber and the professional rules. A practice website with service pages, online appointments and emergency information starts at €1,800 with us.

Frequently asked questions

May we show prices on the website?
You can explain how fees are made up under the GOT and give typical ranges for standard services. Discounts below the single rate are not allowed.
Is online booking worth it for vets?
For plannable appointments such as vaccinations and check-ups, yes. Emergencies should always go by phone, and the website must say so clearly.
How do we keep emergency hours current?
Maintain them in one place in the editor; changes appear on every page immediately.
