Structured data for your website: which schema types still pay off in 2026

Structured data describes a page's content in a form search engines understand unambiguously: that a page is a product with a price, a business with opening hours or a job posting. Google has cut back the display of some types considerably in recent years. This article shows which types still pay off for small and mid-sized businesses in 2026.

What structured data does and doesn't do

Structured data isn't a direct ranking factor. It helps search engines classify content correctly and enables certain enhanced displays, such as prices and availability for products or jobs in Google's job search. AI-based search systems also benefit from clearly marked facts like address, opening hours and services.

The types that pay off

For most company websites these types are relevant:

  • Organization or LocalBusiness: name, logo, address, contact, opening hours, per location.
  • Product with offer: price, availability, reviews for shops.
  • Article or BlogPosting: author, date, updates for guides.
  • JobPosting: for Google's job search.
  • BreadcrumbList: shows site structure in search results.
  • Event: for events with date and venue.

What has gone

In 2023 Google discontinued HowTo results and limited FAQ results to government and health sites; according to Google's documentation, FAQ rich results no longer appear at all in 2026. Existing FAQ markup does no harm but brings no special display. If you're planning now, put effort into the types above instead.

Implement and test correctly

Google recommends JSON-LD in the source code. The information must match the visible content; markup for content visitors can't see violates the guidelines. Test pages with the Rich Results Test and keep an eye on the reports in Search Console. On our websites the content system generates structured data automatically from the maintained content; for existing websites, setup is part of our SEO setup from €450.

Frequently asked questions

Does structured data improve my ranking?
Not directly. It helps content be understood and enables enhanced displays that can improve click-through rates.
Should I remove existing FAQ markup?
No need. It does no harm but no longer brings a special display. The FAQ content itself stays useful for visitors.
Can I generate structured data with a plugin?
Yes, many CMS plugins do. Check that the information is correct and matches the visible content.
