One-off SEO or a monthly retainer: when a fixed-price setup is enough
Many small businesses pay for SEO every month without knowing what for. Much of the work is foundation that only needs to be done right once. Here's what can be done one-off, when ongoing work makes sense and how to spot a fair proposal.
What can be done once
Technical SEO is mostly infrastructure. Set up correctly, it stays correct until someone rebuilds the site.
- Check indexing: sitemap, robots.txt, canonicals, redirects and broken pages.
- Optimise speed and mobile (Core Web Vitals).
- Align structure, headings and meta tags with real search queries.
- Add structured data for the company, services and FAQ.
- Set up Google Search Console and analytics.
- Complete the Google Business Profile and align directory listings.
When a monthly retainer makes sense
Ongoing work pays off when new content is needed constantly or competition is fierce — for example large online stores, or niches where many providers chase the same keywords.
For a tradesperson, a law firm or a service business with a handful of offerings, it is often enough to set up the foundation properly once and add new pages or articles from time to time.
How to compare proposals
Ask what is actually delivered, not just how many hours are billed.
- Which technical issues get fixed, and do I get a before/after report?
- Do I own all accounts (Search Console, analytics, Business Profile) afterwards?
- Is there a minimum term, and what happens when I cancel?
- Are rankings guaranteed? (Honest providers don't.)
Realistic expectations
Technical fixes usually take effect within a few weeks of the next crawl. Better rankings typically build over two to four months. If you need results faster, combine SEO with a focused landing page for paid ads.
Frequently asked questions
- Is one-off SEO really enough?
- For the technical foundation, yes. New content can be produced as needed — a retainer isn't required for that.
- How much does a one-off SEO setup cost?
- It depends on site size and condition. At Onravetoni the fixed-price setup starts at €450.
- Can I do SEO myself?
- Much of it, yes — especially content and the Business Profile. Technical fixes usually need access to code or CMS settings and some experience.
