Online store category SEO: help shoppers choose the right products
A category page should help shoppers find suitable products. A long paragraph beneath a confusing product grid does not solve that problem. Start with the buying decision: what is someone looking for, which choices matter and what question blocks the next step? Use those answers to brief the content, assortment and navigation together.
Give each category a clear buying purpose
Choose a real product group with a useful selection available. Our illustrative example is a workwear shop: a work-trousers category serves a different purpose from a guide to washing workwear. The two can link to each other without trying to perform the same job.
Write the page goal in one sentence: visitors should be able to choose work trousers by use, fit and features. Then inspect the inventory. If important sizes are missing or almost everything is unavailable, improving the assortment takes priority over adding more copy.
- Product group and the main buying decision.
- Available selection and common limitations.
- Questions from sales conversations, returns and support.
- Related categories that provide a useful next step.
Brief the page around selection
Our suggested brief includes a clear heading, short orientation above the grid, useful filters and supporting selection advice below it. Describe differences that actually exist between your products. Do not invent materials, certifications or delivery promises to accommodate a keyword.
For work trousers, the introduction might explain whether the range covers indoor work, construction sites or changing weather. Further guidance could explain pockets, knee-pad compatibility and available fits. The actual advice must match the real assortment; this illustration is not product or safety guidance.
- Heading clearly identifies the product group.
- Introduction explains what is available here.
- Filters support the main selection criteria.
- Supporting text explains genuine product differences.
- Delivery and return information is easy to reach.
Make products reachable through ordinary links
Google recommends linked navigation from categories through subcategories to product pages. Products reachable only through a search box may be missed during crawling. Check that later pages of a category also expose real product links.
Walk the route yourself: homepage, range, category, subcategory, product. Our acceptance test asks whether a new customer can find a suitable item without already knowing its name. Add links from a relevant guide to the category when that helps the reader make a choice.
Make a deliberate decision about filter URLs
Filters can generate a large number of URL combinations. Google documents specific ways to control their crawling. Treat filter handling as a technical decision rather than an automatic supply of new SEO pages. The appropriate approach depends on the platform and existing indexation.
Our planning rule is that an intentionally maintained subcategory needs a distinct purpose, suitable products and an owner. A random combination of sort order, colour and price does not automatically meet those conditions. Document the intended landing pages before changing robots.txt, canonicals or noindex rules.
Test and measure the category journey
Before release, check the mobile product grid, empty filter results, links to later pages and the route to the basket. Verify that the copy matches the available products. Google describes Product markup for specific products; it does not turn a general category into a single product page.
Our measurement proposal is to track organic entrances, product clicks and purchases or qualified enquiries for each category. A shopper who quickly finds the right item is more valuable than a long visit caused by confusion. Record assortment changes alongside SEO changes so comparisons have context.
Frequently asked questions
- How long should category copy be?
- We do not recommend a fixed word count. Write enough to support selection and answer real questions. Repetition added solely for length does not help the buyer.
- Should every filter be an indexable page?
- No. Plan the intended landing pages explicitly, then make treatment of other combinations appropriate to the platform and existing indexation.
- Are guides and categories interchangeable?
- No. A category supports selection and purchase; a guide can answer an earlier question. Connect them where there is a useful next step.
- Does this require rebuilding the store?
- Not necessarily. A clearer brief, better product assignment and corrected links can be implemented in an existing shop. A platform migration needs a separate justification.
