Backlinks for small businesses: legitimate ways to earn links, and what Google penalises

Links from other websites remain among the signals Google uses to judge whether a page is trustworthy. Small businesses get daily emails offering "100 backlinks for €99". Such links tend to harm. This article shows where legitimate links for small and mid-sized businesses come from.

Links you can almost always get

Start with contacts you already have:

  • Industry directories and member lists of chambers, guilds and associations.
  • Partners, suppliers and manufacturers whose products you use: many have dealer or partner pages.
  • B2B customers who list references or service providers.
  • Local clubs, sponsorships, events and municipal pages.
  • Your Google Business Profile and the main industry portals in your sector.

Links through content others cite

The strongest links arise voluntarily because your page is useful: a checklist, a cost overview, a regional analysis, an honest guide. Local media pick up topics relevant to their readers, such as a new offer, an anniversary or an apprenticeship initiative. A short, factual note to the newsroom is often enough.

What Google treats as link spam

Google's spam policies prohibit links bought or given in exchange for something to manipulate rankings, as well as excessive link exchanges, automatically generated links and networks of sites that exist only for links. Paid links, for example in sponsored articles, must be marked with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". Violations can lead to links being ignored or pages being demoted.

Realistic expectations

For a local business, a few dozen relevant links from the region and industry are often enough to catch up with competitors. Volume does nothing; relevance does. As part of our SEO setup from €450 we check which links you're missing and where to get them legitimately.

Frequently asked questions

May I buy backlinks?
Links bought to influence rankings violate Google's guidelines. Paid placements are fine only if the links are marked as sponsored.
How many backlinks do I need?
There's no fixed number. What counts is relevance and quality compared with the competitors ranking for your terms.
Do directory links still help?
A few well-maintained entries in important directories help, mainly for consistent contact details. Hundreds of entries in unknown directories bring nothing.
